Objectives and educational purposes

This is the first program in Cultural anthropology in Bulgaria preparing specialists in the fields of social and cultural research, experts in the cultural industries, the media, as well as the non-governmental sector.

It is carried out in three semesters, the third being entirely dedicate to the preparation of the master thesis, as well as to exchange within international programs such as “Erasmus” and the participation to research and internships. The program organizes annually a summer school with the participation of eminent international scholars, as well as students from abroad.

The program aims at combining theory and field work, at integrating the students into the research teams of the faculty members and stimulating individual creativity and mobility.

Methodology (knowledge and skills necessary for successful professional activity; general theoretical and specialized education, etc.)

Half of the courses are mandatory, the other half are being adapted each year to the interests of the concrete group. The mandatory ones introduce the general concepts, the methods, the theories, the problems of the field. The elective ones focus on more specific topics and individualize the student’s curriculum.

The program relies on previous education in the humanities and social science, whereas students coming from different fields follow a complementary introductory course. The aim is not to have people with uniform intellectual backgrounds, but for each student to contribute with his/her specific expertise. Important factors for the success of the program are general knowledge, openness, mobility, curiosity for other places and cultures.

Professional Competences

The graduates could engage in research with a special expertise in the domain of field studies, qualitative methods of work, interviewing and participant observation. They also develop skills in content analysis, visual and media studies, combining on- and offline approaches.

They acquire profound competence in the sphere of cultural specificities and the interactions within the globalized world, the capacity to professionally evaluate policies, institutions and practices within the cultural domain. This makes them apt to become creative participants in the cultural production in the public and private sector, as well as critical evaluators of the cultural sphere, as journalists or NGO activists.

The intercultural knowledge and skills that the students acquire make them precious participants in all kind of exchange where there is a need to interpret, rationalize, translate cultural specificities.
