The GATE Institute at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” welcomed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation and Growth Tomislav Donchev. The visit focused on GATE’s strategic priorities and its role as a national centre of excellence in the fields of big data and artificial intelligence.
During the visit, the GATE leadership presented key research achievements, the institute’s infrastructure, and the projects that contribute to the development of Bulgaria’s innovation ecosystem. Particular emphasis was placed on the interaction between research teams, industry, and the public sector— a model that GATE actively develops through national and international partnerships.
Minister Donchev underlined the importance of research organisations as drivers of technological innovation, competitiveness, and economic growth.
The visit took place on the eve of UpToGATE 2025 — the international forum for science, technology, and innovation organised by the GATE Institute. The event will bring together leading researchers, policymakers, investors, and business representatives to discuss trends in artificial intelligence and data, and to explore new opportunities for developing innovative solutions in Bulgaria and Europe.
