Between May 30 and June 1, 2025, a specialized training was held as part of the Master's Program „Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer“ at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The course, titled “Introduction to European Union Intellectual Property Law”, was delivered by Prof. Christopher Heath – a long-standing member of the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office and a lecturer at Maastricht University, the Netherlands.
The event had a distinctly practical and interactive focus, which attracted not only students from the program, but also lecturers, researchers, experts, and practitioners in the field of intellectual property.
Professor Heath placed special emphasis on the timely topic of the Unified Patent Court – a new mechanism within the European Union that is generating significant interest in both academic and professional circles. Special attention was also given to the application of EU law in the enforcement and protection of intellectual property rights.
Students from the master’s program actively participated in the training by delivering presentations on specific topics prepared as part of the course. The final part of the event included a simulation exercise in which participants assumed various roles in a mock case, demonstrating practical skills in the context of law enforcement at the European level.
During his visit, Professor Heath met with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Todor Yalamov, Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, and with the Program Director, Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Kiril Velichkov. The meeting included discussions on the structure and content of the training, as well as opportunities for continuing and expanding the collaboration.
