Professor Dale F. Eickelman, Dartmouth College (USA), receives Doctor Honoris Causa of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski

On 26 October 2022, in the Aula Magna of Sofia University, a ceremony took place for granting to Professor Dale F. Eickelman of Dartmouth College (USA) the honorary title "Doctor Honoris Causa" of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski.

 

Professor Eickelman is an internationally recognized Arabist and anthropologist of the Middle East, North Africa, and Islam.

Two of his books (Muslim Politics, co-authored by James Piscatori, and The Middle East and Central Asia: An Anthropological Approach) have been translated into Bulgarian. These books, together with other works of his, have been included as readings in the syllabi of various courses in different under- and postgraduate programs of Sofia University, as well as of other universities in Bulgaria and internationally.

In the past two decades, Professor Eickelman has supported scholars from Sofia University and other Bulgarian academic institutions. He has consulted and participated in a number of research projects carried out by the CSR, authoring, co-authoring and co-editing various scholarly publications by Bulgarian researchers. An indicative example is the recently published book Islam, Christianity, and Secularism in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, edited by Simeon Evstatiev and Dale F. Eickelman, Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2022.

Professor Eickelman was granted Doctor Honoris Causa of Sofia University for his outstanding academic achievements and contribution to academic life in Bulgaria and internationally by a decision of the Academic Council of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski on the initiative of the Center for the Study of Religions and the Department of Arabic and Semitic Studies, supported by the entire Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology.

As part of the ceremony Professor Eickelman delivered an academic speech on "Center and Periphery in the 21st century".
