The ceremony started at 9:45 on 01.10.2010 by laying wraths in front of the monuments of the donators Evlogy and Hristo Georgievs by the Rector and the Academic Council. At 10 o'clock the Rector Prof. Ilchev opened the Academic year in the Aula.

The Rector addressed the first year students by congratulating them for being among the students of the best Bulgarian university and the only one on the European university rankings.

The opening was attended by the Minister of Education Sergey Ignatov and Mr. Ognyan Stoichkov, Chait of the Committee on Education, Science and the Children, Youth and Sport Issues with the National Assembly. The Minister of Education also addressed the first year students.

Prof. Ilchev presented him with a brick from the first Sofia University Building and shared his concern that what would be left after would be only ruins.
