The M.A. programme was started in 2001 as Indian Cultural and Social Studies, in 2007 a profile in Iranian Studies was added to the one in Indian Studies and currently it is run concurrently by the two sections of the Classical East Studies Department within the Centre for Eastern Languages and Studies of Sofia University as Indian and Iranian Cultural and Social Studies M.A. programme. Upto twelve students are admitted per year - six in its Indian Studies profile and six in the Iranian Studies profile. In the Indian and Iranian Cultural and Social Studies M.A. programme, which aims to expand beyond philology the studies on India and Iran in Bulgaria, the students build up their knowledge about the two countries and their respective regions in other diverse fields - the programme includes courses on arts, mythology, folklore, history, religion, philosophy and comparative studies, but along with that students advance their studies in Indian and Iranian languages and literature too. The M.A. programme is open also to students graduated in other subjects at B.A. level who study some additional disciplines form the B.A. curricula of Indian Studies and of Iranian Studies at Sofia University. The duration of the M.A. programme is of three semesters (90 ECTS credits). The degree is obtained upon defending of a M.A. thesis. Teaching is in Bulgarian; free courses in Bulgarian language are provided for foreign students who need to improve their Bulgarian. Classes are held at the building of the Centre for Eastern Languages and Studies of Sofia University (address: 79 Todor Alexandrov Blvd.).
