Sofia University is accredited to offer 5 or 6-year full-time degree courses (after completed secondary education) leading to a master’s degree in the fields of the state regulated professions such as Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, etc. Enrollment is only possible after successful entrance exams and ranking for the respective academic year.
The 6-year full-time Master’s degree program in Medicine taught in English at the Faculty of Medicine started at Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ from 2013 / 2014 academic year. The program aims at offering theoretical knowledge and practical skills through highly qualified teaching combined with opportunity to exercise it in practice in the most modern preclinical and clinical medical complexes in Bulgaria. The training course in Medicine is conducted on the basis of a curriculum which is made according to the Unified state requirements for the master’s degree in the specialty ‘Doctor of Medicine’’ and the qualification of a General Practitioner. The curriculum also satisfies the regulations of the Directive 93/16/EEC of April, 5, 1993, repealed and replaced by Directive 2005/36/EC of October, 20, 2007. The study course duration is 6 years (12 semesters).
A combined written entrance exam consisting of two components – a test in Chemistry, and a test in Biology – has to be passed. The examination is carried out in English. The topics of Chemistry and Biology cover the material taught in secondary school. The duration of the admission exam is four hours. Only applicants who have passed both components of the exam are eligible for ranking. The components contribute to the final grade as follows: 50 % Chemistry, 50 % Biology.
The 5-year full-time Master’s degree program in Pharmacy taught in English at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy is offered to international students from from EU member states and from non-EU countries in the M.Sc. programme Pharmacy in the autumn of 2019. The MSc degree program is in full compliance with the national state regulations and with EU Directives 85/432, 85/433, 2005/36 and 2006/100. A combined written entrance exam consisting of three components – a test in Chemistry, a test in Biology, and a test in English language – has to be passed. Only applicants who have passed all three components of the exam are eligible for ranking. The three components (on the condition that they have been passed) contribute to the final grade as follows: 40 % Chemistry, 40 % Biology, 20 % English. The examination is carried out in English.
The study course duration is 5 years organized within 10 semesters: 9 semesters study at the University and 1 semester (6 months) internship in a Pharmacy. The practical skills of the students are additionally trained during 2 study internships (one in Botany and one in Pharmacognosy) and one Industrial internship in Pharmaceutical Technology. All teachers are acknowledged professionals in their area of expertise, which ensures high quality of education. Upon graduation, the students are awarded higher education M.Sc. Degree in Pharmacy with professional qualification Master of Pharmacy.
Sofia University offers a wide range of Master’s degree programs (after completed higher education, or at least BA / BSc degree) which are taught in English or other foreign languages.
In order to obtain access to further education within the higher education system of Sofia University, the MA / MSc or PhD applicants – holders of Diplomas for higher education awarded from foreign universities – go through a Recognition of degree procedure at the University, which is mandatory, before they apply for the respective programs.
