1. Orientation, educational goals The Bachelor's program in Biology at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", Faculty of Biology is intended for graduates of secondary education (NKR level 4 and 5 - secondary education and IV level of professional qualification) or Professional Bachelor (NKR sublevel 6A) with a pronounced interest in the field of biology. It is implemented according to the curriculum and curricula approved by the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Biology and approved by the Academic Council of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". The Bachelor's program in Biology has existed at Sofia University since 1998. Its main goal is to prepare highly qualified personnel with in-depth fundamental and professional competence for scientific research, practical-applied and popularization activities in the field of biology.
2. Training (knowledge and skills necessary for successful professional activity; general theoretical and special training, etc.) Students of the Biology specialty acquire knowledge and practical skills in the field of biological sciences. Graduates of this specialty possess extensive and in-depth theoretical and factual knowledge in the fields of cell biology, histology, embryology, botany, zoology, human anatomy and anthropology, hydrobiology, ecology, microbiology, genetics, etc. Students independently interpret the acquired knowledge, connecting it with the application of facts and through critical perception, understanding and expression of theories and principles in biology. They are prepared to conduct research at the cellular, organismal, population and ecosystem levels. The methods mastered during practical classes and field and laboratory practices allow them to solve complex problems, apply logical thinking and demonstrate innovation and creativity. Through a wide range of elective and optional courses, students are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in various areas.
3. Professional competencies Students have competence in administrative management of professional activities, including team activities; demonstrate creativity and initiative in the performance of their professional tasks; assess the need for training others in order to increase team effectiveness. They consistently assess their own qualifications in the field of biology by assessing the knowledge and skills acquired to date and plan the need to expand and update their professional qualifications. Bachelors of biology participate in the development of scientific and applied projects, formulate and present ideas, problems and solutions clearly and understandably to specialists and non-specialists; express attitudes and understanding of issues by using methods based on qualitative and quantitative descriptions and assessments. Bachelor graduates collect, classify, evaluate and interpret data from the field of biology in order to solve specific tasks, apply the acquired knowledge and skills in new or unfamiliar conditions, demonstrate the ability to analyze in a broader or interdisciplinary context.
4. Professional realization The professional realization of bachelor biologists is in various state, cooperative and private institutions and companies related to the study and application of the laws in the living world and to the rational and sustainable use of nature, in the field of agriculture, fisheries, medicine, ecotourism, water treatment technologies, biological control of natural resources. As executive staff, they can work in the system of the ministries of agriculture, health, environment and water, in academic and departmental institutes.
