Sofia University Confucius Institute Awarded the Prize of Institute of the Year

Sofia University Confucius Institute is amongst the 25 establishments awarded the honorary prize of “Excellent Institute for the Year of 2017” out of 525 institutes worldwide.

On 12-13 December, 2017,the XIIth Congress of the Confucius Institutes was held at the International Congress Center in Xi’an, capital of the Chinese province of Shanxi. This year the main topic of the congress was the deepening of the cooperation and the innovative development for the establishment of a community working towards the common future of mankind. The Congress was attended by some 2 500 delegates – university rectors and heads of Confucius Institutes from 140 countries and regions.

The Bulgarian delegation, led by the Vice-rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Associate Professor Georgi Vulchev included also the member of the Management Board and honorary head of the Sofia Confucius Institute Professor Alexander Fedotov.

That far there are 525 Confucius Institutes in 146 countries worldwide and 1 113 Confucius Classrooms. Amongst them, in 53 countries of the One Belt, One Road route there are 140 Confucius Institutes and 136 Confucius Classrooms.

Being fully aware of its role in the integration of Bulgaria in the “One Belt, One Road” initiative and the “16 + 1” platform, in 2017 the Sofia Confucius Institute did its best to establish new forms in broadening the framework of teaching the Bulgarian public Chinese language and culture. For the whole year of 2017 10 488 academic classes in Chinese attended by 2 625 learners were held; another 78 cultural events were marked attended by some 25 000 people. During the past year the IVth Silk Road (“One Belt, One Road”) International Conference and the Confucius Institute Week dedicated to the “One Belt, One Road” scored remarkable success.

The Main Executive Board of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing (Hanban) appreciated highly the work of the Sofia Confucius Institute and awarded it with the honorary prize of “Excellent Institute for the Year of 2017”. The Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and Chairperson of the Management Board of the Confucius Institute Ms. Liu Yendun awarded the prize to the leader of the Bulgarian delegation Associate Professor Georgi Vulchev. The high prize was awarded to another 24 Confucius Institutes worldwide.
