Procedure for accepting short-term

Exchange students at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski


1. The exchange of students is done only within a valid Memorandum of Understanding between Sofia University (host institution) and the Partner University (home institution).

2. The study period at Sofia University should not be longer than 1 academic year i.e. from 1 (winter) to 2 (summer) semesters.

3. The interested students have to be nominated officially by the home University. They apply for short-term study with following required documents:

  • Application form - duly filled, signed and stamped;
  • Valid Language Certificate of English Proficiency - the students are asked to prove language skills equivalent to level B1 of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). For proving their language your proficiency, the students have to present a language certificate for English B1. The certificate should be issued in English language by TOEFL (min. 450/130/60), IELTS (min. 4.5 scores), Cambridge Preliminary English Test Certificate (Cambridge English Scale score - min. 140 scores).
  • Transcript of Records with all courses attended by the student issued by the home University, in English;
  • Copy of the passport (valid 6 months after the short-term period expired).

The application form and all supporting documents of the students should be sent to the International Relations Office at Sofia University by e-mail only through the respective International Relations Office at the Home University.

Application forms sent directly by the student will not be accepted.

5. Deadlines for application are as follows:

  • winter semester/ the whole academic year – 31st May
  • summer semester – 31st October

6. The applications duly received in Sofia University will be subject to approval by the host Faculty of Sofia University. The host Faculty reserves the right to determine specific conditions to accept the student and not to approve the application.

7. The exchange students whose applications are approved will receive an invitation letter issued by the International Relations Office at Sofia University.

8. Sofia University could provide dormitory facilities for the accepted exchange students on the basis of availability.

9. Sofia University will issue a Transcript of Records by five (5) weeks after the assessment period has finished. The Transcript will be sent to the respective International Relations Office to the home University.
