On May 19, 2020, a collaboration agreement was signed between the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission and the Faculty of Economics and Business administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”. On behalf of Sofia University, the agreement was signed by the Rector, Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov, Dr. and on behalf of the JRC – by the new General Director Stephen Quest.

 

According to the agreement, the two sides will implement collaboration for their research in several thematic areas:

• The role of energy infrastructure for energy security.

• Causes of energy poverty and how to reduce it.

• Socio-economic effects in the decarbonization of coal regions.

 

The signing of an agreement between FEBA and JRC is the result of number of actions that will deepen the contacts for both sides. As part of this process, on February 17, 2020, FEBA’s Dean Assoc. Prof. Atanas Georgiev, PhD and the Team member of the Department of Industrial Economics & Management, Assist. Prof. Mariya Trifonova held a meeting at the JRC Research Center in Petten, The Netherlands, with Dr. Efstathios Peteves (Head of Knowledge for Energy Union in the Energy, Transport and Climate Directorate), Dr. Evangelos Tzimas (Deputy Head of Knowledge for Energy Union in the Energy, Transport and Climate Directorate) and Dr. Marcelo Masera (Head of Energy Security, Distribution and Markets Unit in the Energy, Transport and Climate Directorate) to present FEBA and to discuss the parameters of the cooperation agreement.

The partnership between JRC and FEBA envisages joint research activities, events, as well as the opportunity FEBA’s researchers to make visits at the JRC institutes.

 

The agreement also offers the possibility of joint doctorates, as well as joint projects on Euratom and Horizon Europe.

 

The Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Georgiev expresses special gratitude to Prof. Dr. Albena Vutsova, Visiting Professor at FEBA and a member of the Board of Governors of the JRC, as well as to the previous Acting Director of the JRC – Charlina Vicheva, for their support during the realization of the cooperation agreement.
