Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ is the first institution of higher education in Bulgaria. It was established in 1888 after a decision of the National Assembly as a Higher School of Education, which became a University in 1894. In 1905 it took the name Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’.

Over the years Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ has grown into a fully developed academic institution. Today, it is considered the largest and most prestigious educational and scientific center in Bulgaria.

At present, the academic structure of the University comprises 16 faculties offering 119 study programs (after completed secondary education) in humanities and sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy included. The University offers a great variety of Master’s degree programs (after completed higher education), programs in English and other foreign languages included.

Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ is accredited and evaluated in every 6 years by the Bulgarian National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency (NEAA) and maintains the leading position in the Rating System of High Academic Institutions in Bulgaria. According to the present general institutional accreditation (given after a decision of the Accreditation Council from 20.09.2018) the University’s achievements are generally assessed at 9.61 points (out of 10).

Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ is constant among the best world universities according to QS World University Rankings and ranks in the 701-750 position for 2018 year. The University is among the top 3.1 % in the university rankings of the 2017 Center for World University Rankings (856th position among the 27 770 high academic institutions assessed).

Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’ traditionally maintains strong contacts with universities from all over the world. Exchange and research programs with partner universities for students and academic staff have taken place for many years. The University takes part in many international programs of the European Union for student and academic mobility, such as ERASMUS +.

The University’s Library has large and diverse holdings of over 2,620,000 volumes of scientific literature, rare and valuable editions, periodicals, electronic media and others. Its collection of old-print, rare, valuable and unique publications is exceptionally rich. Currently the University Library offers a wide spectrum of library and information services. The University Library online catalog contains over 1,100,000 bibliographic records.
