On March 21, 2023, a team from the Department of Economics organized a meeting with students from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Sofia University to discuss current issues related to joining the Eurozone. Students from all undergraduate majors of the Faculty, colleagues from other departments and other universities in the country, and representatives of state institutions were present in the almost full hall 400.

The meeting was opened by Assoc. Prof. Dimitar Zlatinov, Head of the Department of Economics, who noted that the department's team continues to monitor the topic of Bulgaria's accession to the Eurozone and to build on the already developed collective monograph "Challenges facing the Bulgarian economy on the path to Euro Area membership" on the occasion of the 120th anniversary in 2022.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Stefan Petranov raised essential questions about the sustainable and effective functioning of the country's institutions as a critical condition for achieving rapprochement with the member states of the Eurozone. Assoc. Prof. Milen Velushev emphasized fulfilling the legal criteria for accession and compared the ongoing processes in Croatia and Romania.

Assoc. Prof. Stela Raleva paid attention to the processes of natural and nominal convergence of Bulgaria and the degree of convergence. Assoc. Prof. Zlatinov focuses on implementing the budget criteria and the country's financial risks.

The effects of the introduction of the euro on the price level in the example of Croatia were discussed by Chief Assist. Prof. Daniel Kasabov and Prof. Dr. Vanya Ivanova commented on some benefits and risks of membership in the Eurozone, emphasizing price stability, the competitiveness of the economy, and the sustainability of the financial sector.
