Students from all faculties of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” are trained at this Department in 24 sports. All trainers use specific training programs approved for each discipline to improve students’ physical condition.

According to the latest changes in the Sports Act and the Higher Education Act all university students must have 60 hours of sport each academic year. The Sports Department gives students the opportunity to choose a sport and a form of study of their own preference in general training groups, groups profiled in specific sports and the sports teams of the University. Moreover, students are allowed to participate in more than one sport or to alternate the sport they practice every academic year. At the end of the academic year students are assessed by exams.

The specialists at the Rehabilitation Centre conduct individual sessions for students with special medical needs.

The Department staff select and coach the University sports teams that participate in contests and competitions at different levels and in different national and international events. Since 2002 Sofia University has had a student goalball team with excellent rank in international competitions.

Each year summer and winter training practices are organized with the participation of students, with the exclusive opportunity to develop or improve their skills in skiing, hiking, swimming, water and winter sports.

Annually the Department nominates the best sportsmen and sportswomen of the University.
