Educational objectives

The Master's program "Regional dimensions of Global Tendencies – China, East and South-East Europe, 19-21st сenturies" has been designed for students who have obtained a Bachelor's and / or Master's degree in national and international high schools and academies in the field of humanities and social sciences. Oligatory requirement for the applicants is to be fluent in English.The program is designed for students with special interests in the history and contemporary development of the East Asian region and particularly in China, as well as Eastern and Southeast Europe as well as in the international political, economic and cultural relations between these two regions.The Master program offers the study of a wide range of disciplines, allowing students specialization in different spheres of both research and practical activities. The aim of the program is to give an opportunity to the students to acquire in-depth knowledge and skills which will boost their career plans related to the knowledge of the East Asian region and China in particular as well as the relations between Europe and Asia with a special focus on the place and role of the Eastern and Southeast Europe in these relationships.The courses offered in the program are adjusted to the latest trends related to the dynamically developing of the China-Europe relationship within the Chinese “Belt and Road Initiative” which became more popular as the “New Silk Road”.

Professional Qualifications

Upon successful completion of the Programme, the students will have acquired the following skills and competences:

  • Acquiring deep insights into concepts and processes related to the understanding of the East Asian societies, particularly understanding on China, as well as processes related to the Eastern and Southeastern Europe as a specific region in which the interests of major geopolitical players intertwine. Special attention will be paid to the current socio-economic, political and cultural processes in these two regions;
  • Expanding and deepening the knowledge of students about the cultural, economic and political ties of the countries part of the two regions, as well as their contacts with Europe – in cultural, political and economic terms;
  • Understanding the current state and trends of the economic development of China and the Eastern and Southeast European countries in the context of globalization;
  • Preparing a master thesis on topical and currently important socio-political, economic or cultural subject. Preparation of thesis aims to develop and reveal student’s analytical abilities and their skills to write and defend their thesis convincing and with a strong and clear arguments;
  • Improve their ability to work with different types of documents, original texts and other primary sources.

Professional Realization

The students successfully completed the Master Program „Regional dimensions of Global Tendencies – China, East and South-East Europe, 19-21st centuries.“ will be able to accomplish their professional realization in spheres related to the countries of the two studied regions, within different governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the field of media and the in the field of real economy, working for companies operating and carrying out trade and economic activity between the two regions in the east companies looking for investment opportunities in Bulgaria and in Europe in general, and vice versa, in companies that open up to the Asian markets. The number of such companies will inevitably increase in the coming years due to China's intense development and opening up to the world within the “Belt and Road Initiative”.

Admission Requirements

  • Language competence on level B1/B2 according to the European Framework is required.
  • Candidates will be admitted to the Programme after an interview in English.


Within 4 semesters, students study 17 compulsory courses. During the first, second and fourth semesters students are trained at the university they are enrolled in, and in the third semester – in the university partner. the students must cover 30 credits from compulsory and / or elective courses.

From the eligible courses in the first and second semester the students choose at least two of the proposed disciplines. The list of elective courses is filled each year with new proposals and / or current specialized courses from other Master programs, in order that the provided number of teaching hours of the courses coincides and the courses are in English.

Earning a Master’s Degree in History follows a successful defense of a thesis (written under the guidance of a scientific supervisor) before a state exam committee.
